(Professional Organization of Women of Excellence Recognized). Located in the heart of Manhattan, Times Square is an internationally recognized destination and the center of New York City’s Broadway Theater District and entertainment industry. About Dr. Sarah L. Marshall
Dr. Sarah L. Marshall serves as a patient and community educator, independent living donor advocate, supervisor 1, basic life support (BLS) instructor, certified childbirth educator, and assistant clinical professor at SUNY Downstate Health Sciences University.

She is also the author of “What’s in a Pause: The Career Voyage of a Nurse,” a reflective account of her personal and professional journey. In the book, Dr. Marshall explores her family’s history of heart disease associated with iodine deficiency disorders and explains how the early death of her maternal grandmother inspired her determination to become a registered professional nurse.

Through her writing, Dr. Marshall shares her dedication to education, awareness, and the use of evidence-based practices in clinical care. Her goal was to help prevent the suffering and loss experienced by families and vulnerable populations affected by iodine deficiency disorders. She also recounts significant personal health challenges that altered the course of her nursing career, including the discovery of a breast lump and injuries sustained in an automobile accident that resulted in three brain surgeries.

Along with her leadership and educational roles, Dr. Marshall is dedicated to community outreach and public health initiatives. She spearheaded a program that provided free clinical breast examinations, mammograms, and Pap tests to uninsured and underinsured women. Her advocacy also focuses on healthcare concerns such as disease prevention, early detection, improved access to care, and legal protections for vulnerable populations.

Dr. Marshall holds a Doctor of Nursing Practice in leadership and systems management. Reflecting on her educational journey, she said, “Initially, my intention to become a registered professional nurse was interrupted because of a breast lump, which led me to refocus and become a nurses’ aide, followed by a licensed practical nurse. Later, I earned four degrees, ending with my Doctor of Nursing Practice.”

An active member of the healthcare community, Dr. Marshall is involved with the Sigma Honor Society of Nursing, American Nurses Association (ANA), American Nursing Informatics (ANIA) New York Tri-State, Nurses Association of the Counties of Long Island (NACLI), and Kiwanis International. In her spare time, she values spending time with family and enjoys volunteering with charitable organizations, reading, and traveling.

“What’s in a Pause: The Career Voyage of a Nurse” is available through Xlibris and Amazon.
